Retaining Wall Construction in NY & CT
Segmental block, natural stone, boulder, and engineered retaining walls for sloped properties. Drainage-engineered to prevent failure.
Retaining walls are structural — they hold soil, manage water, prevent erosion, and shape outdoor spaces. A failing retaining wall isn't just ugly; it's expensive, dangerous, and can damage everything downhill from it. JL Construction Group has been Westchester County NY and Fairfield County CT's trusted retaining wall contractor since 1999, with 25+ years of segmental block, natural stone, and engineered wall installations across sloped properties from Backcountry Greenwich to Tarrytown's Hudson hillsides to North Stamford's wooded ridges.
A retaining wall is one of the few hardscape elements where bad work doesn't just look bad — it fails structurally and causes real damage. Proper engineering, correct base prep, drainage behind the wall, and structural reinforcement are non-negotiable. Our crews are dialed in for that level of execution.
Types of Retaining Walls We Build
Segmental Block (SRW) Walls
Pre-cast concrete blocks (Belgard, Allan Block, Versa-Lok, Cambridge brands). Cost-effective for walls up to 6 feet without engineered design.
Natural Stone Walls
Native fieldstone, granite, limestone — for properties where appearance and integration with original 1920s/1930s stonework matter.
Engineered Retaining Walls
Walls over 4 feet, walls supporting traffic loads, walls with surcharges — require professional engineering and often permits.
Boulder Walls
Large stone (1-3 ton boulders) for naturalistic settings, especially in Ridgefield, Wilton, Weston, and Backcountry Greenwich.
Timber Retaining Walls
Pressure-treated landscape timber for shorter walls (under 4 feet) and informal settings.
Concrete Retaining Walls
Poured-in-place reinforced concrete for high-load applications.
Garden Walls (Decorative)
Lower freestanding walls (under 3 feet) defining beds, terraces, lawn edges.
Tiered Wall Systems
Multiple shorter walls instead of one tall wall — better drainage, easier permitting, better aesthetics.
Foundation Retaining Walls
Walls integrated with home foundations, basement walkouts, exterior staircases.
Our Retaining Wall Process
- 1
Free site survey and design consultation
We walk the slope, take elevation measurements, document drainage patterns, photograph existing conditions, and discuss material/style options.
- 2
Engineering coordination
Walls over 4 feet (NY/CT code) typically require engineered design. We coordinate with civil engineers and pull required permits.
- 3
Written estimate within 48-72 hours
Detailed line-item pricing with engineered drawings where applicable.
- 4
Excavation
We excavate to the proper depth and footprint — typically 12-18 inches deeper than wall height for proper footing.
- 5
Footing and base
Compacted gravel base or concrete footing per design. This is where most failed retaining walls actually fail — base preparation matters more than wall material.
- 6
Drainage installation
Perforated drain pipe behind the wall, gravel backfill, geo-textile filter fabric. Non-negotiable — a wall without drainage will fail.
- 7
Wall construction
Block-by-block, stone-by-stone, course-by-course. Each course leveled, aligned, and reinforced (geogrid, rebar, or whatever the design specifies).
- 8
Backfill and compaction
Properly compacted soil and/or gravel behind the wall.
- 9
Cap installation
Wall cap (matching block or natural stone) for the finished top course.
- 10
Surface restoration
Lawn restoration, planting beds, hardscape surrounding the wall.
Materials We Use
- Segmental Wall Blocks — Belgard, Allan Block, Versa-Lok, Cambridge.
- Native Fieldstone — New England regional stone for historical match.
- Granite — Custom cut for high-end installations.
- Engineered Timber — Landscape-grade pressure treated.
- Reinforced Concrete — For poured-in-place applications.
- Geogrid Reinforcement — Plastic mesh for tall block walls.
- Drainage Pipe — 4-inch perforated PVC.
- Geo-Textile Filter Fabric — Non-woven for drainage protection.
- Crushed Stone Backfill — 3/4-inch processed gravel.
Retaining Wall Pricing Guide
- Segmental block wall — $35–$80 per square face foot.
- Natural stone wall — $60–$200 per square face foot.
- Boulder wall — $40–$120 per square face foot.
- Timber wall — $25–$50 per square face foot.
- Engineered/poured concrete — $80–$200 per square face foot.
- Engineering & permits (when required) — $1,500–$5,000+.
- Drainage system (per linear foot) — $20–$60 (typically included in wall cost).
A typical 50-foot residential retaining wall, 4 feet tall (200 face square feet), runs $9,000–$35,000 depending on material and complexity.
Service Areas

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
For walls over 4 feet (NY/CT code), generally yes. We assess your situation and pull required permits as part of the project.
How long does a properly built retaining wall last?
Segmental block: 30-50 years. Natural stone (in concrete-set installations): 50-100+ years. Timber: 15-25 years.
Why do retaining walls fail?
90% of failures come from inadequate drainage behind the wall, not the wall material itself. Water pressure (hydrostatic pressure) from saturated soil pushes walls outward. Proper drainage prevents this.
How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering?
Generally 3-4 feet maximum for non-engineered walls in NY/CT (varies by jurisdiction). Taller walls require engineered design and permits.
Can you replace just a section of my failing wall?
Sometimes — if the failing section is contained and the rest is structurally sound. We assess on-site and recommend section repair or full rebuild.
What's the difference between segmental block and natural stone walls?
Segmental block = engineered concrete units, fast install, lower cost. Natural stone = traditional craftsmanship, longer-lasting, premium aesthetic, higher cost.
Can retaining walls be built in winter?
Block walls can be installed in cold weather with care. Stone walls with concrete-set joints require above-40°F temps. We typically schedule April through November.
