Belgian Block Installation in New York & Connecticut

Hand-set granite borders, aprons & walkway edging — concrete-bedded for permanent durability. Westchester & Fairfield County since 1999.

4.9-Star Rated Licensed & Insured in NY & CT Family-Owned Since 1999 Free Estimates · 24hr Response

Belgian block — hand-cut rectangular granite — is the gold standard for premium driveway aprons, borders, and walkway edging across the Northeast. The reason: properly installed, it lasts essentially forever. JL Construction Group has been hand-setting Belgian block across Westchester County NY and Fairfield County CT since 1999, with hundreds of installations integrated into estate-grade properties from Backcountry Greenwich to Heathcote Scarsdale to Cedar Knolls Bronxville.

The difference between Belgian block that lasts 50+ years and Belgian block that fails in 5 comes down to one thing: how each block is set. Done right, every block sits in a fresh concrete bed with proper joint detail. Done wrong (sand-only base, mortar-only application), the work shifts within a season. Our crews bring 25+ years of dialed-in execution.

Types of Belgian Block Installations

Driveway Aprons

The most-noticed Belgian block detail. A hand-set granite apron transforms an asphalt driveway entrance into a premium feature.

Driveway Borders

Single-row or double-row borders running the length of the driveway, framing the asphalt with permanent definition.

Walkway Edging

Granite borders flanking bluestone or paver walkways, integrating with home stonework.

Garden & Landscape Borders

Curbing for planting beds, lawn edges, hardscape transitions.

Custom Radii & Turnarounds

Curved Belgian block at driveway entries, custom turnaround shapes, integrated apron designs.

Repairs & Re-Setting

Fixing settled or shifted historic Belgian block, replacing cracked stones, restoring joints.

New Cobblestone-Look Installations

Reclaimed antique cobblestone for clients who want a more rustic, irregular look.

Our Belgian Block Process

  1. 1

Free site survey and written estimate

We measure linear footage, walk every transition (apron, border, walkway), and photograph existing stonework so the new installation integrates correctly with what's already there. Quote within 24 hours.

  2. 2

    Excavation

Trench dug to depth — typically 8-10 inches for our region — wide enough for the block plus concrete bed and edge protection.

  3. 3

    Base preparation

Compacted gravel sub-base (3-4 inches) goes in first to prevent settling.

  4. 4

    Concrete mortar bedding

Each block is set in a fresh concrete bed. This is the difference between Belgian block that lasts 50+ years and Belgian block that fails in 5. No shortcuts here.

  5. 5

    Hand-setting

Each granite block hand-placed, leveled, aligned. Curves, radii, and corners get the time they need — every joint tight, every line straight.

  6. 6

    Joint work

Joints filled with mortar (for permanent applications) or polymeric sand (for paver-style aesthetic), finished cleanly.

  7. 7

    Cure and clean

Installation cures in place; we clean every block, sweep the surface, and walk through the finished work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Belgian block and cobblestone?

Belgian block is rectangular cut granite — uniform, sharp-edged, formal. Cobblestone is rounded river stone — irregular and rustic. Most premium NY/CT applications use Belgian block.

How long does properly installed Belgian block last?

Set in a concrete bed, hand-set Belgian block lasts essentially indefinitely. Light joint maintenance every 10-15 years.

Can you match new Belgian block to my existing stonework?

Yes. We routinely match grade, color, and finish to original 1920s and 1930s masonry — particularly important on historic Greenwich, Scarsdale, and Bronxville properties.

Will Belgian block survive Northeast winters?

Granite is essentially impervious to freeze-thaw. Concrete bedding is what makes the difference — sand-bedded block heaves and shifts.

How much Belgian block do I need for an apron?

A standard residential driveway apron runs 12-20 linear feet. We measure on-site as part of the free estimate.

Can Belgian block be installed in winter?

Concrete bedding requires temperatures above 40°F. We typically schedule installations April through November.

Do you handle permits for Belgian block work?

For driveway aprons connecting to public streets, yes — we coordinate the curb cut permit. Borders entirely on private property generally don't require permits.
